What to expect

We start by giving you an introduction to the many areas of work around the Bank of England. You will get an idea of the breath of specialist roles here as well as receiving training sessions which focus on essential skills. 

You will be enrolled on a part time level 4 qualification which provide you with knowledge that complements the skills and invaluable on-the-job learning that you will gain whilst working here.

We want to support you to succeed so you will be given sufficient time and support to balance your studies with work. As part of the apprenticeship you are allocated 20% of your working hours to study. You will also have the support of your line manager and our Future Talent team will also be on hand to support you throughout the programme.

This programme equips apprentices with the skills to drive business and digital change through data analysis, enabling them to make informed decisions across various industries. With a flexible 15-month learning journey that combines online and practical methodologies, apprentices gain valuable workplace skills and earn membership in BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, upon completion.

Data Analyst (JustIT)

The main role of a data analyst is to collect, organise and study data to provide business insight. As a data analyst you will have the opportunity to manage, cleanse, manipulate, abstract and aggregate data. You would also work with the data to conduct a range of analytical studies.

You will play a key role in producing high quality datasets and supporting economists in their work. When you complete this programme, you will be certified in Data Analysis Tools and Data Analysis Concepts.

About the programme

This 36-month programme is designed to help you to get started in your career whilst studying towards a fully funded degree (degree studies can take up to 48 months).

Data scientists continuously seek to expand and develop their technical skills. They can draw upon a range of knowledge from a variety of fields and organisations.

Digital and Technology Solutions - University of Exeter

This area is responsible for a range of technologies used in the financial system.  Technology that tracks all bank notes in circulation, records gold in the vaults, manages the real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) (a system that settles some £575 billion sterling payments and securities every day), and defends us from cyber-attacks.

This programme can introduce you to experts in the field and provide a wide range of opportunities from the development of systems that underpin our economy, to working on high profile projects.

We have partnered with the University of Exeter, who will provide you with quality tuition as you study towards your undergraduate degree.

To apply for the Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship you will need at least five GCSEs at grade 4 (or C) or above, including English and Maths. You’ll also need to have achieved or be predicted the following: A-Level BBB, IB 30 or BTEC DDM.

Professional Economist - University of Kent
 
People who work as economists in the private and public sectors. The curriculum covers core materials included in a UK Economics BSc degree. However, the focus of this programme is the application and practical approach to both teaching and learning analytical economics. It also teaches important skills like planning, team work, adaptability and leadership.

The University of Kent’s School of Economics deliver the Professional Economist Degree Apprenticeship. The classes are based on interactive e-learning, on and off-site academic learning and support, and annual residential weeks at the University of Kent (Canterbury campus).

To apply for the Professional Economist Degree Apprenticeship, you must have a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 (or C) and above (including English), with Maths at grade 6 (or B). You’ll also need to have achieved or be predicted three A-Levels (or equivalent) at BBB or above (or 120 UCAS points).

Financial Services Professional - University of Exeter

If you are interested in building your knowledge and a career in the Financial Services industry, this Degree Apprenticeship could be for you. We currently partner with the University of Exeter to deliver this Degree Apprenticeship, which combines the Level 4 Investment Operations Specialist Apprenticeship and Level 6 Financial Services Professional Apprenticeship. Successful completion of the Apprenticeship will result in the award of BSc (Hons) Applied Finance, including CFA Institute Level 1.

First of all, we’ll introduce you to the different types of work we do. Then, you’ll work in a team, getting involved in our policy, research and operational work. You’ll also attend regular training and events with your fellow Industrial Placement colleagues.

Supervision

What to expect

We start by giving you an introduction to the many areas of work around the Bank of England. You’ll learn the business and technical skills you’ll need as you start your career. You’ll have the opportunity to work with the firms we regulate to make them safer and sounder. 

As part of your role, you’ll learn to assess risks, prepare reports and hold firms accountable. You’ll also qualify as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. We’ll support you through your professional studies with study leave, funding for study and a salary increase as you progress on the programme.

To apply for the Trainee Solicitor Development Programme, you must meet the below entry requirements:

• GCSE English and Maths at grade C (4) or above, or English and Maths Functional Skills at pass

Predicted or achieved one of the following:

• 2.1 UK law degree; or
• 2.1 non-law degree plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL);
• or law degree from a non-UK jurisdiction plus a PGDL.

• have not already completed LPC or SQE1&2
• are a UK citizen or you hold another residence status which meets the apprenticeship funding criteria set out by the Education and Skills Funding Agency
• comply with any Solicitors Regulation Authority character and suitability requirements

What to expect

You will receive a bespoke induction and training programme for the Bank’s trainee solicitors as well as access to a wide range of training opportunities within the Legal Directorate. In addition to receiving training from colleagues in Legal Directorate, you will regularly receive training from experts from across the wider Bank as well as external speakers from the Government, other UK regulators such as the Financial Conduct Authority, overseas authorities, and the private sector.

You will be exposed to a unique combination of public and private law issues. We work on legal matters related to:

• financial services regulation, 
• banking and payments, 
• insolvency and restructuring, 
• litigation, and 
• the UK’s central bank. 

How could you develop?

On the programme you will:

• A paid-for course at the University of Law to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE1 and SQE2).
• spend 20% of your working week studying with the University of Law (ULaw) and 80% of your week working within our Legal Directorate.
• You will have the opportunity to qualify as a solicitor at the UK’s central bank and you can earn as you learn.
• Receive study leave around exam periods.
• Complete a mix of six and twelve-month rotations across three or more divisions of the Legal Directorate – giving you experience in Central Banking, Financial Stability, Enforcement and Litigation, Insurance and Deposit-takers, and EU and International.
• Have access to a wide range of induction and training opportunities and support from a highly experienced legal team.

After passing your SQE and completing work experience you will be eligible to become a solicitor registered with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (subject to meeting relevant character and suitability requirements). At this point, we would welcome you to apply for jobs in the Bank of England as a newly qualified lawyer.

To apply for this internship you will need to be currently studying for a PhD in any subject relevant to central bank policymaking.  

What to expect

This programme will offer you an invaluable opportunity to gain experience in economic analysis, policy making and research, at a central bank. 

You will have the opportunity to work on a live research project, working with Bank of England researchers. You will see firsthand how research is conducted and utilised within a policymaking institution.

Is this route for you? 

This is for you if you hold (or expect to complete by end-2025) a PhD in any subject relevant to central bank policymaking.

We are looking for recent PhD graduates with a desire to carry out and publish innovative, policy-relevant research, and to contribute to live central bank policymaking. 

What to expect

This is a permanent position, of which the first three years are spent on the PhD Research Programme. 

Researchers on the programme work within one of our policy areas, and spend at least 50% of their time producing, publishing and disseminating research that is relevant to the Bank of England’s policy and research agendas. 

Our large research community includes researchers from a range of disciplines, with a common interest in issues relevant to central bank and public policymaking. 

Our research economists enjoy a rich and stimulating environment, have close engagement with policymakers, and make a key contribution to policy analysis. 

How could you develop?

We offer excellent training opportunities, both to expand researchers’ technical skills and knowledge, and to help researchers develop the skills to maximise the policy impact of their work. As a large central bank, we provide sizable computing resources and have unique, rich and novel datasets.
